And Then There's Oswald
Posted by maggie
Credited to Walter Lantz, Oswald was initially created by Walt Disney.
That was beside the point in
Four Color Comics
#102,
Oswald the Rabbit
(copyright 1946 by Walter Lantz Productions). Again, it's an entire comic book by Walt Kelly -- and someone else. The map on the inside of the front cover is solid Kelly, but "Oswald Rabbit and the Great Egg Hunt" (which takes the entire issue) is by Kelly -- and someone else. Or maybe Kelly working at breakneck speed in the inking -- but it doesn't quite look like even sketchy Kelly.
The zany script is Kelly at his wildest, and it's easy to imagine young readers asking their parents to explain some of the gags. This is a never-yet-reprinted treasure.

Hi Maggie,
Apologies for kvetching, but according to several pieces I've read in the past, John Stanley was one of the lead writers on Oswald (and many other Lantz characters) before his tenure with Little Lulu began: http://www.fmydesign.com/stanleyisms.htm
"The Great Egg Hunt" certainly seems to contain numerous Stanleyisms, most obviously characters repeatedly shouting "Yow!" This would suggest that Stanley, rather than Walt Kelly, is the scripter of the story -- making the reference to his name on the page you've reprinted a kind of signature (in the otherwise creditless comic), rather than a tribute.
That said, I absolutely agree with you that the art is in part Kelly's throughout the story. It's almost as if everyone but Oswald and Toby themselves resemble Kelly designs.
