And My Jaw Drops ...
Posted by maggie

Neil Gaiman, who is on the other side of the globe at the moment and has far better things to do than read my blog, responded to my post about buying from Amazon UK.

He advises I can just log in on that site. "It uses all your Amazon.com information. You can also use amazons france germany and japan if you want. Even canada."

Woo hoo! The world is mine -- mine, do you hear?

Thanks, Neil!

*facepalms*. Have I not boasted to you about finding Lotte Reininger dvds on amazon.de? Have I not mentioned buying Amazon.uk DVDs? (although for Japanese stuff, I tend to use cdjapan.co.jp, since I don't read Japanese). Oh, dear. Sorry for the lapse. You could have been global-shopping so much sooner...

Yes, you have, indeed, made those boasts. Did I remember?

Sigh ...

But fill in folks about the details: How long does it take to get an order? What are the CD shipping costs like? Am I correct in guessing that air mail is the only way to go? What about books, then?

America yearns to know!

It takes about 10 days from amazon.uk, depending on availability and shipping. And yes, you can only do air mail, and it costs a lot. Typically, if I'm ordering from amazon.uk, I try and make the order at least $100 to make up for the shipping costs. You may also want to look and see if the "UK version" of something is available on amazon.ca.

I can't remember how long it took with cdjapan, but I remember being surprised at how quickly I got the Ghibli "Thank You, Mr. Lasseter" documentary dvd.

I order from amazon.co.uk quite frequently. I bought the Stephen Fry narrated copies of the Harry Potter books from there. I have bought loads of Goon Show CDs from there (only problem with those is that they count as books and so have a heftier shipping cost). One nice thing is that the price actually goes down from the listed price before shipping is added. The listed price on the site includes VAT and since we are getting it shipped to the US, they remove that.
