This issue contained the ballot for the 1972 Goethe Awards, Don and Maggie Thompson?s fan awards for the field of comics art, continued from their own previous fanzine, Newfangles. Nominations from 335 fans yielded from four to seven nominees on the ballot in each of 10 categories. ?No award? was an option in each category. (More than 700 would vote in this round of the awards.)

An ad from the San Diego Five String Mob touted the third annual San Diego West Coast Comics Convention (later Comic-Con International: San Diego). Announced guests included Bob Clampett, Robert Bloch, Shel Dorf, Jack Kirby, Mike Royer, and Ray Bradbury. The ad apologized that, ?for various reasons, one of which was the Republican convention, a definite date has yet to be decided.? As in 1996, when the Republican National Convention inhabited the con?s usual digs during early August, forcing the show?s move to early July, the GOP had scheduled its convention for San Diego. In 1972, however, the ITT scandal, now hardly remembered by any but the most hardcore politicos, prompted the Republicans to hold their convention in New Orleans, instead.

P. Craig Russell and Dan Adkins produced this month?s cover, which featured a dozen Marvel heroes.
