The Buyer’s Guide #81

May 1, 1975
84 pages, 4 sections ? Cover unsigned
Includes Beautiful Balloons #31 by Don and Maggie Thompson
?Big news! Marvel and DC, in the same spirit of cooperation pioneered by Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox with The Towering Inferno, are planning a joint production in which Superman will battle Spider-Man,? the Thompsons reported. Two such stories came out in the 1970s and are available in reprint volumes today.
But how could they know that the really big news lurked in a review a few paragraphs below? ?Giant-Size X-Men is, in Don?s opinion, a very, very good book, judging from the first issue. Dave Cockrum does excellent work. (We have heard that some of the new X-Men ? there are now 13 X-Men! ? are characters Dave dreamed up for the Legion of Super-Heroes and which DC rejected; DC?s loss is Marvel?s gain if this is true.) And Len Wein?s script is first rate.? Just think ? it could have been the other super-team Marvel launched this month, mentioned immediately afterward ? anybody remember TheChampions?
