1970s Archie comics on DVD

I was in J&R Music World (New York City) the other day, and I was surprised to find, along with DVD collections of Mad, National Lampoon and Rolling Stone, a DVD offering a complete run of Archie comics from the 1970s. According to the Archie Comics website, this contains “Every Archie Comic from Febuary 1970 to December 1979 on DVD-Rom. 97 Complete printable comics and annuals.” Price is $19.99.

Wonder if this is the start of a new series. And why are they starting from the 1970s in particular?

Interestingly, one of the issues included is #283, August 1979, notable for its cover and story plugging “International Children’s Appeal,” which was a fraudulent charity according to a report broadcast by the ABC television newsmagazine 20/20.

One Response to 1970s Archie comics on DVD

  1. Lee Houston, Junior says:

There was a item somewhere in CBGXtra’s past about how the publisher of the Marvel Comics DVD-ROM collections’ contract with that company had ended and that they were going on to other venues. I guess this is one of them.

Meanwhile, I’m sure the specific story you mentioned was included for the sake of historical completeness. After all, Archie Comics’ heart was definitely in the right place at the time and it’s not their fault that they were taken in by those behind the scam too.
