Astonishing X-Men gay wedding announcement makes The View

Late Monday, May 21, Marvel announced that major news would be announced this morning on ABC’s The View. Speculation as to its nature was confirmed in a short segment with co-host Whoppi Goldberg letting viewers of the daytime talk show know that longtime openly gay mutant super-hero Northstar would propose to his boyfriend Kyle in the pages of Astonishing X-Men #50, which ships to stores May 23.

While Goldberg treated the subject straight, co-host Joy Behar had to make the inevitable, clichéd joke, “Does that mean Batman and Robin can come out of the closet?” Goldberg went on to spotlight the diversity of characters on the wraparound cover of Astonishing X-Men #51, scheduled to ship June 20, which features the wedding of Northstar and Kyle.

Immediately following the program, Marvel issued its own release about the upcoming event, including the art shown here.

As noted earlier, The View is an ABC program, ABC is owned by Disney, which also owns Marvel. The View‘s other hosts, including Barbara Walters, remarked on how the event is cutting edge, failing to note that Archie Comics had a gay wedding for Kevin Keller in one of Archie’s possible futures in Life With Archie a few months ago.

Both issues of Astonishing X-Men are written by Marjorie Liu, with art by Mike Perkins, and each retails for $3.99.
