As part of its multi-day pop culture series of sales, Heritage Comic Auctions began the two-day comics portion July 26 with a bang, setting new records for prices realized on original art. Featured in that day’s sales were the first pieces from the Shamus Collection of original art, amassed by Martin Shamus, the father of former Wizard publisher Gareb Shamus.
Much of the original art in the collection is from the 1980s and 1990s with a focus on Todd McFarlane. While McFarlane’s original art for the cover of Spider-Man #1 (Aug 90) sold for $385,500, it was his art for the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #328 (Jan 90) that set a new record, closing at $627,250.
That price far surpasses the record set for a splash page from Batman: The Dark Knight #3 by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson, which sold for $448,125 in a Heritage sale last year.
Heritage’s sale continues today. For more information and to see the lots up for bids, visit www.comics.ha.com.
