(Iola, WI) – F+W Publications Associate Group Publisher, Sports and Pop Culture Jeff Pozorski has announced the promotion of Comics Buyer’s Guide Editor Maggie Thompson to Senior Editor and Comics Buyer’s Guide Managing Editor Brent Frankenhoff to Editor. The changes were effective as of Jan. 1.

“Maggie and Brent have both actively and professionally shared their hobby knowledge with fans for years,” Pozorski said. “Their respective interests complement each other, making a stronger editorial package overall. These promotions reflect their contributions to Comics Buyer’s Guide and its affiliated products.”

Thompson has been CBG’s Editor since Krause Publications (now a division of F+W Publications) acquired The Buyer’s Guide to Comic Fandom from the publication’s founder, Alan Light, in 1983. From 1983 to 1994, Maggie co-edited the paper with her husband Don. Often noted as one of the founders of comics fandom, Thompson has supported the hobby all her life, receiving Diamond Comic Distributor’s Lifetime Fandom Award in 1991 and the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award in 1995 and being named Friends of Lulu’s first “Woman of Distinction” in 2004.

“Being named ‘Senior Editor’ is a nifty tribute,” Thompson commented, “as I enter my 25th year at the helm of the longest-running magazine about comic books. I should point out that the title has nothing to do with so-called ‘senior moments’ and everything to do with the deference paid me by … Hmmm. Well …” She paused. “Never mind. I guess that deference thing is overrated, anyway.” She laughed.

“Seriously, though, it’s terrific to see Brent’s work, skill, and knowledge rewarded. He’s been the enabler for CBG for a long, long time; it’s thanks to him that both CBG’s appearance and its contents have continued to fare so well. When we toss into the mix his online presence at CBGXtra.com, it’s clear that his contribution to our output is vital.”

Frankenhoff joined CBG in 1992 as an Associate Editor and has not only worked on that publication as Projects Editor and, later, Managing Editor, but has also been Associate Editor and, later, Comics Editor and Managing Editor of CBG sister publication Comics & Games Retailer. He has also contributed to or edited every CBG comics price guide book since the line began in 1993. In addition to his print work, he also is the most active poster on CBGXtra.com.

A lifelong comics fan, Frankenhoff’s collection spans the history of comics from the Golden Age to the present. “Thanks to my parents for keeping their comics and giving them to me to read coupled with my insatiable thirst for knowledge, I’m knowledgeable in every era of comics,” he said. “I enjoy sharing that knowledge with the readers, both online and in print. I’ve learned plenty from Maggie in the past 14 years and wish I could have learned more from her late husband Don in the couple of years I worked with him.

“As readers have seen in the past few years, CBG has changed to keep current with the times and I plan to continue that evolution in the future without losing our focus on comics history. Tying the newest technologies to the richness of the past is a fun challenge and one I’m looking forward to continuing with Maggie for many years to come. As far as the deference thing goes, I plan to defer as much to her in the future as I have in the past.”

Congratulations to all!

Brent has been involved in the day-to day operations of the magazine for just about all the issues in the quadruple-digits -- and I don't think there's any aspect of the production he hasn't had some involvement with. I'd say the magazine's in good hands -- but it's the same good hands its been in.

(So, Maggie and I can still get our columns in after deadline, right, Brent? )

Actually, my tenure with the magazine started with CBG #982 in 1992, which you can see Maggie and me holding between us in the photo above. The news snippets I wrote for my job interview made it into an earlier issue that year.

And, yes, if you promise to bury those incriminating photos from that one Christmas party once and for all, you may have a couple of extra days on your deadline. But don't tell the other columnists or they'll all want extensions.

Brent and Maggie,

A very hearty congratulations on your promotions. They're both well-deserved.

Now get back to work (just kidding [insert wink emoticon that doesn't want to work for me here] )

Shhh! Don't mention paychecks! How do you think we keep the subscription rates so low?

I think the emoticon for a wink is just a semicolon followed by a right parenthesis. Let's try...

Paychecks? You mean we're supposed to get paid for this stuff?

Congrats, Brent. It's about time you got a little kudos, for all you do. Man, it must be the life, getting paid for all this "work" you and Maggie do.

Oooops, "work"?? You probably don't know what that means. You have so much fun, you probably don't remember what work is.

Congrats to Brent and Maggie. Up, Up, and away! (Man, it's STILL corny).

Hey Brent, John Petty and I want an extension.

Allow me to add my kudos to you and Maggie as well. Hope you enjoyed the easy ride, because now things are going to get busy, chortle snicker guffaw.

Not sure how I got on the list... but got an email about what's what at the CBG today. I can't think of a better reason than to sign up to this message board to say--

"Great news ...congrats peeps!!!"

Hopefully all that comes with a buncha benjamins attached!

Great news, and well deserved--
